Sangiovese is by far and away Italy’s most widespreadgrape variety. It accounts for a staggering 71,000 hectares of vineyards, equivalent to 11% of total plantings. The best known of these are obviously Tuscan, as Sangiovese is the grape of the region’s high-profile DOCGs (Chianti, Chianti Classico, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Brunello di Montalcino) but it is also the most planted variety in the neighbouring regions of Umbria, Marche and Romagna, resulting in Sangiovese wine production with a distinctive characteristics unique to their own locality.
For best results decant into a carafe or decanter - or just nice big wine glasses (tulip-shaped are ideal, as they serve to focus those lovely aromas!) - this helps you maximise the perfumes and textures.
